Appraisal

What is a medical appraisal?

A medical appraisal is a process of facilitated self-review supported by information gathered from the full scope of your work. It consists of a meeting, either face to face or by video assisted conferencing with an approved, trained appraiser. The annual appraisal and supporting evidence are key to demonstrating your GMC fitness to practise whatever your branch of practice. The appraisal is submitted to a Responsible Officer for review.

RESPONSIBLE OFFICER

What is a Responsible Officer?

Responsible Officers (ROs) are the individuals within designated bodies who have overall responsibility for helping you with revalidation. These individuals review your annual appraisals and every 5 years submit outcomes to the GMC that hopefully will lead to a doctors licence to practice being renewed.

Revalidation

What is a medical revalidation?

Medical revalidation is the process by which the General Medical Council (GMC) confirms the continuation of a doctor’s licence to practise in the UK. All doctors who wish to retain their licence to practise need to participate in revalidation. The purpose of revalidation is to provide greater assurance to patients and the public, employers and other healthcare professionals that licensed doctors are up-to-date and fit to practise. It is a key component of a range of measures designed to improve the quality of care for patients.

Designated body

What is a a Designated Body?

A Designated Body is the organisation that will provide you with regular appraisals and support for revalidation. Most doctors have a clear connection with an organisation and this is usually their primary employer, such as the NHS employer, Primary Care Trust or private establishment. Each Designated Body has a Responsible Officer designated to them. Some doctors can not identify a Designated Body, and submit their appraisal directly to the GMC revalidation team via a process known as an Annual Return.
